Leeds Bradford International Airport (LBA) was originally Yeadon Aerodrome, a 60 acre grassland site along Bradford Harrogate Road, which began operating in October 1931 with club flying and training flights being predominant activities.
By the mid 1930’s the airport had been extended by a further 35 acres and schedule air services commenced and 609 Squadron, Royal Auxiliary air Force was formed at the Aerodrome. Plans were also announced for a £40,000 terminal building but only one wing was built and then demolished in 1977 to make way for new facilities that form the basis of the present terminal.
All civil flying ceased with the outbreak of war. During the war years more than 4,500 aircraft were built at the Avro Factory adjacent to the Airport. So that these new aircraft could be test flown, two runways, taxiways and flight test hangars were built on the aerodrome.
Post war civil flights began in 1947, and in 1953 Yeadon Aviation Ltd was formed to operate the Airport, then the Leeds Bradford Airport Joint Committee took over the Airport in 1959. Work was soon underway to improve the facilities, with the installation of permanent airfield lighting and extensions to passenger facilities and apron areas.
During the 1960’s permission was given to construct a new runway. Work commenced quickly and the new runway became operational in 1965. In May 1965 the terminal building was substantially destroyed by fire so construction of a new passenger terminal commenced later that year and was opened for use in February 1968.
Then during the late 1970’s a Public Inquiry was held to consider a planning application to extend the runway and terminal facilities to make Leeds Bradford a Category B regional airport, the Secretary of State approved the application but imposed a restriction on operating hours. The main runway was extended by 2,250 metres, improvements to the surrounding link roads took place and substantial improvements were made to the terminal facilities.
In 1987, LBA was converted into a limited company under the provisions of the Airports Act 1986 and the five metropolitan councils of West Yorkshire became the shareholders of the new company.
LBA gained approval for 24 hour availability in 1994 which allowed operations to continue during night-time hours, albeit with restrictions only permitting the quietest aircraft to operate between 2300 and 0700.
In 1996 the Airport saw its millionth passenger, and in 2001 just over 1.5 million passengers passed through the Airport. Since 1996 the terminal building has virtually doubled in size with new and improved arrivals and departure facilities, lounges and two new air bridges. Construction works have recently been completed on a £5 million scheme to refurbish and extent the landside catering and restaurant facilities and new aircraft maintenance facilities and executive aviation centre are to be built on the south side of the airport.

Leeds Bradford Airport is in a well-recognised position on the world wide airline network, thanks to the success of its “hub and spoke” links which provide connections world wide via London (Heathrow and Gatwick) and major European airports. Leeds Bradford airport started life at Yeadon Aerodrome in 1930. By 1936, £40,000 had been put aside for a terminal building, but only one wing was completed.
During the Second World War civilian flying ceased at the airodrome, which was requisitioned by the Air Ministry. Two hard runways – a blessing for Leeds Bradford International Airport in later years – plus taxiways were built in the wartime development.

The airport was taken over by the Ministry of Civil Aviation on 1st January 1947. From then the airport operated on a limited scale for the West Riding Flying Club and the Lancashire Aircraft Corporation until 1953 when Yeadon Aviation Ltd, was formed and expanded these facilities to cater for charter and scheduled air services.
1954 saw the development of facilities such as radio, approach and navigational aids, passenger accommodation and catering to deal with the developing services. By 1960 there had been a number of improvements including extensions to the Passenger and Customs Halls, car parks provisions, the demolition of obsolete hangars, a public bar and restaurant provided and new equipment fitted in the control tower. It had also been decided to demolish three fifths of the huge wartime flight shed to make more parking space on the Apron. Plans were also put in place for a new terminal building, capable of dealing with 2,000 passengers an hour.
The Airport had certainly come a long way in those first 30 years, however it was nothing compared to the alterations, modifications and progress over the next 40 years leaving us with the airport we see today.
